John H. Gohde wants to know, if your belly is obviously sticking out. Abdominal obesity is the most dangerous form of being overweight that you can suffer from.

A recent research study reported that belly fat is an important risk factor for heart disease.

“CONCLUSIONS: Indices of abdominal obesity were more consistently and strongly predictive of coronary heart disease than body mass index. These simple and inexpensive measurements could be used to assess obesity-related coronary heart disease risk in relatively healthy men and women.”

While scientists will quibble over rather or not the waist-to-hip ratio, a waist-only measurement, or the your body mass index (BMI) is more predictive of serious heart trouble, one should never underestimate the value that taking a good look at yourself in the mirror provides. A protruding stomach from excess fat deposits is never a good sign. Excess belly fat is quite easy to detect. So, please stop lying to yourself.

John H. Gohde advises that if you are suffering from a big belly, then you need to:

  1. cut back on your eating or calorie intake from whatever source, and
  2. increase your level of physical activity.

While spot reducing has been proven not to work that don’t mean that there isn’t a health benefit to be obtained from exercising those abdominal muscles of yours, according to John H. Gohde. To strengthen a muscle you have to exercise that muscle. So, John says don’t be fooled by the word games of Science Geeks. Doing sit ups exercises will tone your abdominal muscles.
