John H. Gohde reports that new research on middle-aged and elderly American veterans shows that exercise can dramatically prolong a man’s life.
This should not be a surprise to anyone interested in natural health. What Jack LaLanne has been saying all his life is absolutely true.
For both black and white men it was their fitness level that was most strongly linked to their future risk of death. To effective exercise has to be fairly intense. So, to prolong your life you have to engage in exercise more intense than slow walking. This exercise study is recommending fairly brisk workouts, such as jogging on a fairly fast treadmill.
Metabolic equivalents ares commonly used in the context of aerobic exercise to gauge the intensity of a workout. Every extra point in metabolic equivalent conferred a 10+ percent reduction in the risk for death. Moderately fit men showed a 20 percent lower risk for death. While those in the highest fitness level had a 50 percent lower risk.
